[Kelly’s Newspaper Column]
February is the month of love so let’s get lovey-dovey! I make that statement because of Valentine’s Day being in February, but I stand corrected. February is not the month to observe love per the holiday and awareness observance calendar (I say every month is awareness and observance of love), but there are many things that are ascribed to the month of February.
Black History Month. American Heart Month (maybe cuz of Valentine’s?). An Affair to Remember Month. (I’m not making this up. My source: http://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/february-monthly-observations/) Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr from 1957. 60 year anniversary. Now that is cause for celebration.
It would be prudent to include baked goods – February is National Bake for Family Fun month, and canned food, (ew!), as this month is also deemed Canned Food Month, while you celebrate An Affair to Remember month.
February is also Great American Pie Month and National Cherry Month, they go together quite nicely. Is it coincidence that February is also National Snack Food Month AND National Children’s Dental Health Month? We bake with the family all month, including lots of pie, and partake of national snack food celebrations and then we go visit the dentist to make it all better. Or something like that.
We are plenty hungry in this short cold month. February is also National Grapefruit Month, National Macadamia Nut Month, and National Hot Breakfast Month. Because grapefruits, macadamia nuts and hot breakfast need a month to call their own.
This source includes February as National Weddings Month. I think they’re missing something. Maybe there are loads of weddings because of the day of Cupid (and I do proclaim February a month of love), but statistics show that most weddings (over 80%) happen May through October. Maybe February is National Wedding Planning month. Or a big month for engagements.
February is hailed as National Library Lovers Month. For those who dig books, every month is national library lovers month. This month is also National Creative Romance Month. My prince qualifies for that every month as well.
My research expanded to a few more online sites. According to brownielocks.com, February is also Pet Dental Health Month so take the kids and the dog to get those teeth cleaned. February is also National Mend a Broken Heart Month and National Condom Month. Let’s hope so.
It’s also National Prevent a Litter Month. Perhaps it is also Pet Condom Month and I missed that somewhere in my search.
Stop the presses! I see February is also National Haiku Writing Month! In the spirit of National Novel Writing Month – NaNoWriMo – that happens every November, Haiku lovers created their own month complete with Twitter hashtag NaHaiWriMo.
Haiku is short form Japanese poetry. Three lines, 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables. Let’s do it! I will post one a day on my Facebook page so follow me there and send yours to me at info-at-kellyepperson-dot-com. Here’s my first attempt:
This short month, cold, long,
Dark and dreary, not much sun,
But look! Here comes Spring!
Let’s do another:
Valentine’s Day show
An Affair to Remember
Cary Grant and me!
February is full of “national month of” (as all our months are), so take time to participate and enjoy. Especially the baked goods!
